Sometimes, after that crazy day at work, and on our way home, we start craving that delicious snack or that delicious meal that would be the highlight point of our day. We get home, rush to the fridge and that’s when, for our frustration, we realise… we’ve got nothing to eat.
It’s absolutely maddening, isn’t it? And, oh, how our mouths could already taste the amazing food we were going to savour, before we opened the fridge door and the cruel reality came crashing in…
Okay, maybe I’m exaggerating a bit, but you must’ve felt this at some point, right? Wanting to eat something really bad, already tasting it in your mouth and longing for that first bite and, then, coming home and finding out the fridge was empty…
At some point, we’ve all been through this.
But, as bad as this is – there’s something that’s even worse. “What is that?” – you ask? – Well, coming home and already knowing beforehand the fridge was empty – because we have absolutely no idea what to buy.
That’s pretty frustrating, right? And people who’ve decided to make healthier diet choices or become vegetarian or vegan are even more liable to experience this. We look around the supermarket, and we find we just don’t know what to buy.
Well, if you are like us, and you’ve been having some trouble figuring out what foods to buy, and you are hoping to find some healthy alternatives – we’ve got you covered.
That’s right, we’ve been there and because we know how much it sucks, we’ve compiled a list of 100 foods you can have at home all the time. Yes – one hundred – that are tasty, easy to find (depending where you are from, of course) and packed full of healthy benefits for you.
And, as a special regard for the people who have decided to cut out chemicals and genetically modified organisms, and go all in in a healthy lifestyle, we know the struggle to find food that can be included in your diet, so we assure you this will be of great help.
Now, I bet you’re really curious, right now, aren’t you?
Good! So, let’s dig in!
The 100 Healthy Foods That Will Leave You Craving More
Well, I would very much enjoy explaining to you the benefits of each one but, since we’re referring to 100 foods, here, it could get a bit complicated for you to read all 100 descriptions. So, below, you will only find the name of each food.
Now, if you were hoping to find out a bit more about each food and it bummed you out to know we’re not going to be explaining that – we’ve got good news for you. In case you really want to find out their benefits, by clicking on the name, you’ll be directed to a link explaining exactly that. And, to make sure you retain as much information as possible from this article, I also made a point of emphasizing the healthiest foods by writing them as a second list under their specific categories.
So, because the fruit should come before the meal (read more about it here, if that surprised you), let’s start with that, shall we?
Even though all of these fruits (the ones listed above and below) are very important – you’ll want to remember the next ones for the next time you go shopping. These are, without any doubt, the healthiest, as well as the best ones to have at home at all times.
And, now, moving on to the vegetables.
When you were younger, did you use to dislike vegetables? Well, if you did, it’s completely normal, even I used to, as a kid. The problem for me was that I didn’t like the way they were cooked and I didn’t know how many varieties there were. If I did, my whole experience of vegetables would’ve changed massively…
If you went through the same thing, knowing there are many different and tasty kinds of vegetables, and which ones to buy, will help you massively, especially knowing they all have amazing health benefits, and most of them are actually quite cheap.
And these are the tasty vegetables we were talking about:
Beet, Black Garlic, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Capsicum, Carrot, Celery, Collard Greens, Cucumber, Eggplant, Fennel, Fenugreek, Green Beans, Green Peas, Leeks, Maca Powder, Mustard Greens, Olive, Romaine Lettuce, Swiss Chard, Tomato, Turnip Greens.
Now, the ones I’d recommend most that you have at home all the time, for their amazing health benefits, are these:
And here comes one of my favourite parts.
Nuts And Seeds
If you are a nut and seeds’ lover, like me, I’ve got great news for you! The truth is, they are so versatile, these really are the best foods you can buy. You can cook them, eat them as snack and even mix it with other foods! They offer you a ton of vitamins and help your body function more properly. Pretty amazing, right?
If you’re interested in learning about their effects on your body, you can get more on each one, individually, just by clicking in their name.
Now, moving on to the next category.
Beans And Legumes
Beans are some of the best foods you can have at home, and the same goes to legumes. They are extremely healthy and also somewhat cheap, so it can help balance out your health and your food expenses. Plus, you can use some of them, like Tofu, to substitute meat, if you’ve opted not to eat it. Very practical, right?
If you like grains, I’d always recommend those without gluten. Our bodies aren’t prepared to ingest it, so you’d do best to steer clear of it. For a more in depth explanation, this article will help – One Hack To Always Know What To Eat.
Now, speaking of gluten-free grains, you’re going to love these.
Yet, the one I could not fail to mention is Quinoa. As an exception, I will explain its benefits. I will do so, particularly because it is considered a Superfood and I believe it would be highly valuable to you to know the benefits of having it in your home.
Quinoa is one of the rare plants that has all the amino acids that we need. Our bodies don’t produce all kinds of amino acids, so we have to get some from outside sources. For that reason, it is considered a whole protein food. This means that when you eat this food, you’re giving your body the complete protein it needs – in quality, not in terms of quantity. And that means you’re rebuilding your muscles better – which is even better for you if you exercise, because the better the quality of your protein, the better your results will be.
The same goes to Hemp Seeds, which are also some of the best foods you can eat. If you missed it, you can find them above, in the fruit category.
And now that you’re fully aware of, at least, one amazing benefit of having Quinoa in your kitchen (there are more), let’s move to the last category, shall we?
Herbs, Spices And Other Foods
Here is a mix of different herbs, spices and other great foods that you’d do well to have in your kitchen – not just because they smell amazingly and give a great taste to your food, but because they are also highly beneficial to you as well.
Yet, the next ones are even better. Personally, I have almost all of them at home and they are some of the best foods to keep in your kitchen counter-top. Especially if you suffer from colds regularly.
And that makes a hundred!
These foods are cheap (most, anyway), can be easily implemented in your diet and have plenty of health benefits. I’d call that an awesome deal. Plus, if you checked the health benefits of any, you’d find most of them are powerful weapons against cancer, heart disease and many more diseases. And if you’re interested in losing a few pounds, most of them help with that as well.
So, by choosing to buy veggies, this is all that’s going to come in the “package” for you. And that’s a lot, isn’t it?
Now, there’s something we need sort out. Just eating these foods will not be enough to make you healthier – they have to come from places you trust. And, now, you could start thinking – “Well, I trust the supermarket”.
Well, in fact, this may shock you, but supermarkets are the absolute worst places to buy vegetables. Especially if the food doesn’t even mention the word “Biological”.
The truth is, almost all the foods in supermarkets are genetically modified. This means they aren’t good for you (you can find out why, exactly, here). In fact, they may even cause you health problems. And that is the absolute last thing you want, isn’t it?
So, to avoid coming home with genetically modified foods that are bad you, do your shopping in farmer’s markets and other small places. And, make sure the products are biological. The more biological they are, the better they will do your health and the stronger they will make you feel. And that is really the point, here, isn’t it?
